Vol. 471 No. 6

Written Answers. - Seaside Resort Pilot Scheme.

Michael Ring

Question:

68 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Finance the number of people who availed of the seaside resort pilot scheme since the changes introduced in the 1996 budget; the number of affidavits which were signed by Mayo County Council; the number of affidavits which were signed by Westport Urban District Council; and the names of the people who availed of the seaside resort pilot scheme prior to the changes introduced in the 1996 budget. [21444/96]

There were no changes to the seaside resort pilot scheme in the 1996 budget. Some changes were made to the scheme in section 30 of the 1996 Finance Act. These changes came into effect from 6 April 1996.

I am informed by the Revenue Commissioners that anybody claiming the relief to date would submit their claim on the 1996-97 tax return. In the case of self-employed individuals the 1996-97 return is not due to be submitted until 31 January 1998 at the latest. Therefore, it is not yet possible to isolate the amount of the relief from tax returns.

The Deputy will appreciate that if the data were available, the Revenue Commissioners' obligation to observe confidentiality would preclude them from giving the information requested in regard to the names of the people who availed of the relief.
