Tógfaidh mé Ceisteanna Uimh. 75, 85, 86, 87 agus 88 le chéile.

Hunting on State-owned foreshore, State-owned lakes and other accretions belonging to the State is regulated under section 30 of the Wildlife Act, 1976. The total number of section 30 permits issued each year from 1990 to 1996 is as follows: 1990, 504; 1991, 365; 1992, 293; 1993, 457; 1994, 490; 1995, 606; 1996, 562 (to date).

As many permits are for multiple areas and for periods of up to five years, it is not practicable to give details of the permits issued in respect of particular lakes. Permits may be issued to individuals or gun clubs which submit applications and it is not the practice to publish names of individual permit holders.

A list of lakes considered as State-owned in the context of section 30 permits follows as Appendix I. Permits are currently issued in respect of 31 of those lakes. While the legal title to these lakes may be disputed in some cases, responsibility for the conservation of wildlife on State-owned lakes rests with the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) of my Department. Other Departments, local authorities and State bodies have various responsibilities for diverse matters relating to these lakes.

My Department has no plans at present to develop State lakes nor are there plans to sell them. The Central Fisheries Board has made a proposal to the NPWS to lease a number of these lakes for the development of fisheries and this is under consideration at present.

Appendix I: State-owned lakes.
