100 Mr. N. Treacy asked the Minister for the Environment the reason a project (details supplied) in County Galway has not been sanctioned; when this project will be sanctioned; if he will allow this project to proceed on a phased basis, if so, the date of commencement of the first phase; the amount of money to be allocated for both the project and each phase thereof; and if he will make a statement on the matter. I propose to take Questions Nos. 99 and 100 together.

These large, high-cost group water schemes are being considered for assistance from the European Regional Development Fund under the Operational Programme for Water Services, 1994-99. It is intended that the mid-Galway scheme, by far the larger of the two, will be developed on a phased basis. Both schemes are being considered in the context of the allocation of grants for group schemes in 1997, details of which I intend to announce shortly.

Question:

101 Mr. A preliminary report prepared by Galway County Council for the proposed Ballinasloe regional water supply scheme, a local authority scheme, is with my Department; there is a possibility that the scheme could be developed on a phased basis with a view to serving existing group water schemes. However, having regard to the high level of commitments under the water and sewerage programme, I cannot say when it may be possible to approve any such phases.
