Vol. 471 No. 6

Written Answers. - Herd Depopulation.

Joe Walsh

Question:

136 Mr. J. Walsh asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry if he will have arrangements made to depopulate a cattle herd (details supplied) in County Cork; his policy regarding this herd; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [21409/96]

The Deputy will be aware that it is my Department's policy, when a case of BSE is confirmed in an animal, to slaughter the herd in which the animal is located as well as its birth cohorts and progeny. In this case, the birth cohorts of a BSE positive animal are located in the herd of which details have been supplied and the Department is making arrangements to slaughter these animals. It is not proposed to slaughter any other animals in that herd.
