Vol. 471 No. 8

Written Answers. - Bantry (Cork) Port.

Joe Walsh

Question:

124 Mr. J. Walsh asked the Minister for the Marine if he will provide adequate funds to allow Bantry Harbour Board to locate appropriate navigational aids in Bantry Bay to facilitate the opening of the Whiddy Oil Terminal by the Irish National Petroleum Company; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [22362/96]

The provision of port infrastructure such as that referred to by the Deputy is a matter for a commercial harbour authority itself to fund from revenues generated by traffic through the port.

My Department had supported an application by Bantry Bay Harbour Commissioners for EU grant aid towards the installation of a vessel management system but this was unsuccessful.

I understand that Bantry Bay Harbour Commissioners may soon agree an arrangement with port users for the installation of appropriate navigational aids.
