Written Answers. - Legislative Programme.

Séamus Hughes

Question:

15 Mr. Hughes asked the Minister for Justice the legislative programme for her Department; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [21785/96]

The Deputy may be aware that on 18 September the Government Chief Whip published details in relation to the Government's Legislation Programme. The justice Bills expected to be published this session were listed as the Sixteenth Amendment of the Constitution Bill, an outline of the legislation which would be introduced should the amendment be passed, a Bail Bill and a Children (Juvenile Justice) Bill. The Amendment of the Constitution Bill has been passed by the Houses of the Oireachtas and the outline legislation relating to it has also been made available. There are two justice Bills before the House at present: the Criminal Law Bill and the Garda Síochána Bill. The Criminal Justice (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill is currently before the Seanad.

Other justice Bills contained in the programme published on 18 September were: Offences Against the Person Bill, Criminal Law (Insanity) Bill, Criminal Law (United Nations Convention against Torture) Bill, Fundraising for Charitable and Other Purposes Bill, Fraud Offences Bill, Europol Bill, Land Registry Bill, Attachment of Earnings Bill, Data Protection Bill and Indexation of Fines Bill.

The programme of 18 September did not include legislation on decommissioning or the recently announced Courts Commission Bill and Prisons Board Bill.
