Vol. 471 No. 8

Written Answers. - Criminal Injuries Compensation Scheme.

Kathleen Lynch

Question:

26 Kathleen Lynch asked the Minister for Justice the progress, if any, which has been made in reviewing the criminal injuries compensation scheme; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [21707/96]

As the Deputy will be aware, the Government's policy agreement A Government of Renewal includes a commitment to review the criminal injuries compensation scheme. Work on the review, which has involved research into other compensation schemes both in this jurisdiction and abroad, is continuing in my Department and I expect to receive a report shortly, which will set out the options open to the Government.

Any proposals which I might have following detailed examination of these matters will have to be considered and approved by the Government before being announced in the normal way.
