Vol. 471 No. 8

Written Answers. - Garda Transport.

Michael Woods

Question:

34 Dr. Woods asked the Minister for Justice whether she will act to ensure that each Garda station is supplied with a Garda patrol car. [21802/96]

The allocation and utilisation of the Garda fleet is a matter for the Garda authorities. They have informed me that within the Dublin metropolitan area every Garda station is allocated at least one vehicle.

Each divisional officer in the rest of the country allocates vehicles as appropriate for the effective policing of the division. Where a Garda station does not have transport permanently allocated to it, vehicles are provided, as the need arises, from within the district/divisional transport allocation. It would be neither effective operationally nor cost efficient to allocate a vehicle to every station on a permanent basis.
