Vol. 471 No. 8

Written Answers. - Sudanese Conflict.

Mary Coughlan

Question:

55 Miss Coughlan asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs the action, if any, the Government is taking in its role as President of the EU to establish peace in the Sudan and to press for peace initiatives to end the 13 year civil war; the additional aid programmes which could be made available to relieve the suffering of thousands of people in the displaced persons camps, north of Sudan; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [22319/96]

I refer the Deputy to my written reply to Parliamentary Question No. 45 of 12 November 1996 and Questions Nos. 102, 105 and 106 of 20 November 1996 which relate to this matter. I would like to take this opportunity to reaffirm that Ireland, with our EU partners, continue to convey our concerns to the Sudanese authorities about the need to pursue the peace process in Sudan and to provide assistance to whose who have suffered from the conflict.
