Vol. 472 No. 1

Written Answers. - Breaking the Cycle Initiative.

Willie O'Dea

Question:

210 Mr. O'Dea asked the Minister for Education if she will include St. Kieran's Boys School, County Limerick, in the pilot phase of the Breaking the Cycle Project in view of the fact that the school's application was mislaid accidentally and the facts of the case are well known to her Department; and her views on whether it is vitally important that this school is included in view of the fact that approximately 80 per cent of its pupils come from Southhill Junior School and approximately a further 10 per cent come from the Presentation Girls School, Galvane, both of which schools are included in the programme. [22588/96]

I am not in a position to include the school in question in the current phase of the Breaking the Cycle initiative.

This school was one of 221 schools invited by the education research centre in May this year to apply for inclusion in the urban element of the Breaking the Cycle initiative. All the schools in question were advised that the closing date for receipt of applications was 14 June 1996. As no application was received from the school in question by that date, the school did not qualify for inclusion in the scheme.

I understand that an application was eventually submitted to the educational research centre by the school on 10 September 1996. However, by this time the centre had completed the selection process on the basis of the applications received by the due date.

The Deputy will appreciate that it was necessary to apply a cut-off point for receipt of applications so as to ensure the earliest possible implementation of this important initiative.
