Vol. 472 No. 1

Written Answers. - Garda Deployment.

Mildred Fox

Question:

232 Ms M. Fox asked the Minister for Justice if she will consider reinstating a sergeant and two gardaí in Hacketstown Garda station, County Carlow, in view of recent attacks in the vicinity; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [22656/96]

The detailed allocation of Garda personnel and resources to individual areas is a matter for the Garda authorities. They have informed me that Hacketstown is policed as part of the community policing initiative in operation in the Baltingless Garda district. The administrative headquarters is Tullow Garda station and I understand that the Current Garda allocation to the administrative areas is three sergeants and 11 gardaí. The Garda authorities have informed me that there is one garda stationed at Hacketstown at present and that he resides in the locality. In addition, a sergeant based at the administrative headquarters at Tullow has responsibility for policing in Hacketstown.

The gardaí have stated that no incidents of the type referred to by the Deputy have occurred recently in the Hacketstown area. It is assumed that the Deputy is referring to recent incidents in Aughrim which were the subject of the Deputy's Parliamentary Questions No. 220 dated 12 November 1996.

I understand from the Garda authorities that they are satisfied that the community policing initiative currently in operation in the Hacketstown area is adequate to meet its policing needs. I am also informed that they do not intend to allocate additional personnel to Hacketstown Garda station at present. The situation will, however, be kept under continuous review.
