Vol. 472 No. 1

Written Answers. - Social Welfare Benefits.

Michael Ring

Question:

265 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Social Welfare the reason unemployment assistance in respect of a person (details supplied) in County Mayo was stopped in view of the fact that she has no other income, three young children and has proven she is genuinely looking for work. [22629/96]

To qualify for unemployment assistance a person must be capable of, available for and genuinely seeking work.

Following a review of her entitlement, the unemployment assistance payment to the person concerned was disallowed by a deciding officer from 20 November 1996, on the grounds that she was not genuinely seeking work.

The person concerned has appealed this decision. Her case has been referred to the independent social welfare appeals office for consideration. When a decision is given on her appeal she will be notified.
