Vol. 472 No. 1

Written Answers. - Consultation with Employees.

Tom Kitt

Question:

289 Mr. T. Kitt asked the Minister for Enterprise and Employment his views on the decision by Commissioner Flynn to establish a special committee on giving information to and consultation with employees; and the measures, if any, he intends to take to ensure greater consultation with employees at individual company level. [22602/96]

In common with other EU member states, Ireland expressed support of the establishment by the EU Commission of an expert group in an effort to identify solutions to the employment involvement difficulties which have blocked the adoption by the Council of Ministers of the European company statute and other associated draft Council regulations.

Earlier this year the Transnational Information and Consultation of Employees Act, 1996, transposed into Irish law the European works council directive. I would add that Ireland was one of the first member states to effect transposition.

Partnership at the level of the enterprise, including information and consultation of employees, is under discussion in the current negotiations for a new national programme.
