Vol. 472 No. 1

Written Answers. - Unemployment Levels.

Cecilia Keaveney

Question:

290 Cecilia Keaveney asked the Minister for Enterprise and Employment the steps, if any, currently being taken by his Department or any other State agency to deal with the rise of 124 people on the numbers of 1 November 1995 in Buncrana exchange, County Donegal; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [22681/96]

My Department, through its agencies, supports a range of measures to address the needs of persons who are out of work. These include the placement services, training and community employment provided by FÁS. In addition, the county enterprise boards and the industrial development agencies support business start-up and expansion by overseas and indigenous industry and by small business.

These agencies encourage industrial investment nationally, but their brief places particular emphasis on regional development. The specific activities in particular parts of the country are a matter for the day to day operations of these agencies and is not one in which I have a direct function.
