Vol. 472 No. 1

Written Answers. - Insurance Premiums.

Seamus Kirk

Question:

292 Mr. Kirk asked the Minister for Enterprise and Employment if his attention has been drawn to the loading on insurance premiums for diabetics; if he will have arrangements made to examine this matter; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [22712/96]

Insurers impose premium loadings or charge higher premiums in the light of their underwriting experience in each category of insurance business. Most insurers provide cover for diabetics suffering with a mild form of this condition without applying loadings of any kind. Insurers applying loadings on premiums for motorists with more severe forms of diabetes do so on the basis of their claims experience for such policyholders.

I understand that the Irish Insurance Federation have been conducting negotiations with the Irish Diabetic Association with a view to establishing a standard questionnaire for completion by diabetic proposers for motor insurance or named drivers on such policies with a view to a better assessment of the circumstances governing individual risks. I also gather that these negotiations have now been finalised.
