Vol. 472 No. 1

Written Answers. - Trade with Indonesia.

Trevor Sargent

Question:

46 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Tourism and Trade if he will request the Irish Trade Board to cease promoting trade with Indonesia in view of Indonesia's illegal occupation of East Timor and its refusal to comply with UN resolutions; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [22065/96]

As explained to the House by the Tánaiste in reply to a question from the Deputy on 20 April 1994, Ireland is not in a position unilaterally to introduce trade sanctions against Indonesia. However, I understand that An Bord Tráchtála has no specific promotional initiatives planned for the Indonesian market. Ireland, both in the context of the Presidency of the EU and in our own right, continues to support political efforts to find a resolution to this problem including contributing financially towards the cost of talks aimed at a resolution. In so far as my Department is aware no proposals have emerged in an EU context for the imposition of any form of trade sanctions against Indonesia.
