Vol. 472 No. 1

Written Answers. - EU Tourism Council Meeting.

Cecilia Keaveney

Question:

91 Cecilia Keaveney asked the Minister for Tourism and Trade the outcome of the EU Tourism Council meeting of 5 November 1996; and the way in which any decisions made will impact on Irish tourism. [21970/96]

The EU Tourism Council meeting scheduled for 5 November last was postponed because difficulties emerged in relation to consideration of the philoxenia programme — the Commission proposal for an action plan for tourism up to the end of the century. Philoxenia was the main item for discussion at the proposed Tourism Council.

As President of the Council, I am endeavouring, through bilateral contacts, to address the problems which gave rise to the postponement of the Tourism Council and on the basis that this can be done I have made tentative arrangements for a Tourism Council to be held later in our Presidency.
