Vol. 472 No. 1

Written Answers. - National Cancer Strategy.

Máire Geoghegan-Quinn

Question:

143 Mrs. Geoghegan-Quinn asked the Minister for Health whether he proposes as part of his national cancer strategy to put in place a comprehensive policy relating to the hospice movement throughout the country as a whole; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [22566/96]

Limerick East): As the Deputy may be aware, on 5 November I launched the national cancer strategy which includes wideranging proposals for a reorganisation of cancer services. The strategy also deals with the provision of palliative care services, including those provided by hospices. I propose to circulate the full details of the national cancer strategy to all Oireachtas Members shortly.

The strategy indicates that the future development of palliative care services, including hospice facilities, will be promoted in a structured manner. It is my intention to ask the proposed national forum, as outlined in the national cancer strategy, to provide detailed advice on the development of palliative care service nationally. In addition to this the following initiatives for the development of this service will be taken:

— all health boards will be asked to draw up a set of priorities for the development of palliative care services in their area;

— the proposed supraregional cancer services, as outlined in the strategy, will have a consultant led palliative care service.
There will be a programme of phased development of specialist palliative care in regional cancer services, in consultation with the health boards and other involved in palliative care.
