120 Mr. McGrath asked the Minister for the Environment the amount of vehicle road tax collected by each local authority in each of the past ten years. [23237/96]

Details of the amounts of motor tax collected by each licensing authority in the years 1986 to 1995 are contained in the replies to Question No. 134 on 1 November 1989; Question No. 71 on 2 February 1994; Question No. 101 on 19 October 1994; Questions Nos. 41, 70, 84 and 86 on 27 April 1995, and Question No. 308 on 25 July 1996.

121 Mr. McGrath asked the Minister for the Environment the amount refunded to each local authority in each of the past ten years by way of payment to them for acting as a collecting agency for vehicle road tax. [23238/96]

Prior to 1996, the costs incurred by licensing authorities in the administration of the motor taxation system, including driver licensing, vehicle testing, etc., were recouped to each authority by my Department. Under new arrangements introduced with effect from 1 January 1996 these costs are met by the authorities by deduction from the gross proceeds of the tax.

Details of the costs recouped in respect of the years 1990 to 1993 are contained in the reply to Question No. 141 of 16 May 1995. Details in respect of the years 1986 to 1989 and 1994 to 1995 are set out in the following table. The figures for 1995 include costs incurred in respect of the period October to December 1995 which licensing authorities have been authorised to deduct from motor taxation proceeds this year.
