Vol. 472 No. 3

Written Answers. - Schools Building Projects.

Joe Walsh

Question:

130 Mr. J. Walsh asked the Minister for Education the plans, if any, she has for the development of secondary education in Dunmanway, County Cork; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [22976/96]

The two post-primary schools in Dunmanway have submitted applications to my Department for extensive building works which would require significant capital expenditure. Given the demographic trends for the centre, which indicate a downward trend in enrolments in the longer term, my Department is of the view that to proceed with two separate building projects in this case might not achieve the best use of capital funding.

The Deputy will appreciate that it is incumbent on my Department to examine fully the possibility of rationalisation in Dunmanway before proceeding with individual building projects. I can confirm that such an examination is being carried out at present. As soon as this examination is completed, I will be in a position to make a decision on the development of post-primary education in the area.
