Vol. 472 No. 3

Written Answers. - Schools Building Projects.

Mary O'Rourke

Question:

134 Mrs. O'Rourke asked the Minister for Education if she will give details on a year by year basis of the number of capital school projects at primary level which were carried out with the assistance of grant aid from her Department in each of the years from 1987 to 1991; if she will name the school and location in each case; if she will state the amount of State aid in each instance; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [22995/96]

The information requested by the Deputy is not readily available in my Department and I cannot justify assigning scarce staff resources to its compilation. If the Deputy has a query about an individual project, I will be happy to provide as much information as possible.

Michael Ahern

Question:

136 Mr. M. Ahern asked the Minister for Education if she will sanction the necessary funding for repairs to, an extension of and the provision of a lift for physically handicapped students for the Christian Brothers secondary school, Youghal, County Cork in view of the fact that such measures have been agreed on by her Department; and if so, when the necessary works will commence. [23005/96]

Reports concerning the condition of the existing building at the Christian Brothers' secondary school, Youghal, are currently being examined by my Department's technical staff. A response will be conveyed to the school authorities when this examination has been completed.

My Department has agreed in principle to the provision of an extension at the school and a schedule of accommodation has been agreed with the school authorities. However, it is not possible to initiate the architectural planning of the proposed extension until the school confirms acceptance of the cost limits set by the Department.

The installaton of a lift for the physically handicapped students attending the school in question will be planned in the context of the proposed building project. It is not possible at this stage to indicate when construction will commence on this project.
