Micheál Martin

Question:

138 Mr. Martin asked the Minister for Education if she will sanction a resource teacher to work with children with mild learning disabilities in St. Mary's junior school, Dunmanway, and Dunmanway boys' school, County Cork. [23023/96]

I propose to take Question Nos. 137 and 138 together.

My Department has recently sanctioned a special class on a temporary basis to cater for the educational needs of mildly mentally handicapped pupils in three national schools in Dunmanway, including the schools referred to by the Deputy. I understand this class will commence in early December.

My Department has received an application for a special class to cater for moderately mentally handicapped pupils in the Dunmanway area. This application is being considered at present by my Department.
