Vol. 472 No. 3

Written Answers. - School Placement.

Trevor Sargent

Question:

175 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Education the steps, if any, her Department is taking to ensure the provision for a person (details supplied) in County Dublin in view of the fact that he has a diagnosed behavioural problem. [23171/96]

I am aware of the case referred to by the Deputy. The selection and enrolment of pupils in second level schools is, in the first instance, the responsibility of individual schools. In cases such as this, my Department endeavours, by a process of consultation with school management, to have the pupil in question placed in a school in his locality. These efforts, which by their nature can take some time, are ongoing in this case and effort is being made to find an appropriate placement.

Question:

176 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Education the number of people of school-going age who are not enrolled in school due to difficulties in finding a school willing to enrol them. [23172/96]

In cases where parents experience difficulties in having their child admitted to the school system, my Department gives assistance in securing a suitable school placement through the involvement of its inspectorate in a consultative process with school authorities. I should state that while all cases which are brought to my Department's attention are pursued as a matter of urgency, I am not in a position to provide the information sought by the Deputy.
