Vol. 472 No. 3

Written Answers. - Teacher Appointments.

Mary Wallace

Question:

202 Miss M. Wallace asked the Minister for Education if she will give details of all resource teaching appointments at post-primary level on a county by county basis; if she will list the post-primary schools in County Meath which have no such service; the reason for the non-availability of a service to these particular schools; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [23337/96]

The information requested by the Deputy is given in the following table.

I approved the allocation of an additional 56 resource posts to second level schools for the 1995-96 school year. These posts were allocated on the basis of information provided by schools in a specially designed application form. Because of the limited number of posts available, it was not possible to allocate posts to all schools which applied. However, three second level schools in County Meath were allocated posts on that occasion, namely, O'Carolan College, Nobber; vocational school, Trim; and Kells community school.

No resource post has been allocated to the following schools in County Meath: St. Patrick's Classical School, Navan; St. Joseph's secondary school, Navan; Loreto Convent, St. Michael's Navan; Scoil Naomh Ioseph, Clochar na Trócaire, Athboy; Eureka secondary school, Kells; Francisan College, Gormanstown; St. Michael's Diocesan, Trim; Scoil Mhuire, Convent of Mercy, Trim; Ashbourne community school; Coláiste Pobail, Ráth Cairn; vocational school, Athboy; St. Peter's College, Dunboyne; Dunshaughlin community college; vocational school, Longwood and St. Oliver's post-primary school, Oldcastle. The position of these schools will be considered when next it is possible to allocate additional resource posts.

Question:

203 Miss M. Wallace asked the Minister for Education if she will give details of all remedial teaching appointments at post-primary level on a county by county basis; if she will list the post-primary schools in County Meath which have no such service; the reason for the non-availability of a service to these particular schools; and if she will make a statement on the matter. Question:

204 Miss M. Wallace asked the Minister for Education if her attention has been drawn to the fact that there is no remedial teaching service in Ashbourne community school, County Meath, in spite of the fact that there are currently 90 children attending the school who are in need of remedial support; the current position regarding the urgent need for a remedial teaching service at Ashbourne community school; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [23339/96]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 203 and 204 together.

Details of the number of ex-quota remedial posts allocated to second level schools on a county by county basis are given in the following table. Since my appointment as Minister for Education, I approved the allocation of an additional 98 ex-quota remedial posts to second level schools. These posts were allocated on the basis of priority of need and having regard to the existing teaching provision in schools. Given this fact and the limited number of posts available, I was not in a position to allocate a remedial post to Ashbourne community school.

Of the six ex-quota remedial posts currently allocated to County Meath, two have been allocated to County Meath vocational education committee. It is a matter for the chief executive officer to allocate this resource to the schools within the vocational education committee scheme as he sees fit. The following secondary and community schools in County Meath have not been allocated an ex-quota remedial post: St. Patrick's Classical School, Navan; Loreto Convent, St. Michael's Navan; Scoil Naomh Ioseph, Clochar na Trócaire, Athboy; Franciscan College, Gormanstown; St. Michael's Dioscesan, Trim and Ashbourne community school. The position of these schools will be considered again when next it is possible to allocate additional remedial posts.

Question:

205 Miss M. Wallace asked the Minister for Education if her attention has been drawn to the fact that pupils who have an educational difficulty from Ashbourne, the second largest town in County Meath, have to travel 16 miles to Navan to attend special classes; if she will agree to investigate the possibility of having such special classes both at primary and post-primary level in Ashbourne in view of the fact that there are three primary schools in Ashbourne which would have ample numbers of students for such special classes, thus avoiding the need for these children to travel the 16 miles to Navan; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [23345/96]

I have asked my Department's inspectors to investigate this matter. When their report has been received and considered, I will advise the Deputy of the outcome.
