Vol. 472 No. 3

Written Answers. - Garda Deployment.

Ned O'Keeffe

Question:

214 Mr. E. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Justice if she will have arrangements made to have a Garda sergeant appointed to a Garda station (details supplied) in County Cork; if her attention has been drawn to the fact that the station in question has only one serving garda and that the rural area served by the station is large; and if her attention has further been drawn to the fact that the residents of the area are very concerned that the position which became vacant in August 1996 has not been filled. [23090/96]

The detailed allocation of Garda personnel and resources to individual areas is a matter for the Garda authorities. They have informed me that the present strength of the station in question is one garda following the retirement of the sergeant allocated to the station on 18 August 1996. I understand from the Garda authorities that the needs of the station in question will be considered in conjunction with similar vacancies throughout the country when members of sergeant rank next become available for allocation.
