Vol. 472 No. 3

Written Answers. - Investment Based Naturalisation Scheme.

Joe Walsh

Question:

216 Mr. J. Walsh asked the Minister for Justice the number of persons who have been granted Irish citizenship from 16 December 1994 to date in 1996 under the investment based naturalisation scheme; and the names of such persons; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [23196/96]

In the period in question, a total of 28 persons were naturalised on foot of their investments in the State. Included in that figure are ten persons whose cases had been approved in early 1994 by my predecessor before the then Government decided that all investment based naturalisation applications should be assessed by an interdepartmental advisory group operating within terms of reference. The remaining 18 cases were assessed in accordance with that procedure and were subsequently naturalised by me following a recommendation to that effect by the advisory group.

The names of all persons who are granted naturalisation are published in Iris Oifigiúil in accordance with law and where this has not been done to date, relevant details will be submitted for publication without avoidable delay.

On 25 September last in answer to parliamentary Question No. 475, I indicated that 38 persons had been naturalised on foot of their investments in the State. That was an error for which I apologise — the correct figures are as stated above. The error occurred as a result of double counting the ten persons referred to at the start of this answer, i.e. 18 cases during 1995-96 and ten cases which had been previously approved in 1994 and finalised in 1995-96.
