Vol. 472 No. 3

Written Answers. - Slaughterhouse Waste.

Noel Dempsey

Question:

253 Mr. Dempsey asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry whether the report of the interdepartmental committee established by the Government on 1 August 1996 to examine options on the disposal of slaughterhouse waste was presented to Government in early October 1996, further to his answer to Parliamentary Question No. 643 of 25 September 1996; if so, if he will make the report available; if the committee met since its last reported meeting on 19 October 1996; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [22929/96]

The terms of reference of the interdepartmental committee, which was established by the Government on 1 August 1996, were to examine all options with regard to the disposal of slaughterhouse animal waste material, in particular categories of material which cannot be incorporated in animal feed. The committee forwarded an interim report to the Government in October. Further analysis of the various options is in progress and it is expected that an updated report will be submitted to the Government in the near future. It is not anticipated that that report will be published.
