Vol. 472 No. 3

Written Answers. - Information Society Strategy.

Helen Keogh

Question:

21 Ms Keogh asked the Minister for Enterprise and Employment the measures, if any, planned to ensure implementation of the recommendations of the recently established information society steering committee. [23205/96]

In March of this year I announced the establishment of a steering committee to develop a national information society strategy and action plan. The emergence of an information society based on the advances in and convergence of computing and telecommunications technologies, has significant implications for Irish society and in particular Irish business. I want to ensure that we put a strategy in place that will enable Ireland to derive the maximum benefit from the information society.

I expect that the committee will have completed its work by the end of the year. I am arranging for the committee's recommendations to be given immediate consideration. The Deputy will appreciate, however, that until I receive the recommendations I am not in a position to address their implementation.
