Question:

34 Dr. O'Hanlon asked the Minister for Enterprise and Employment if he is satisfied with the number of overseas jobs which have been established in counties Cavan and Monaghan in each of the past two years; the plans, if any, he has to ensure that there is more equity in the distribution of such jobs; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [23101/96]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 31 and 34 together.

In 1994, 175 new jobs were created in counties Cavan and Monaghan, with 120 new jobs being created for the same area in 1995. In respect of companies assisted by IDA Ireland, Information on employment and new jobs is obtained from the Forfás annual employment survey. As the 1996 survey is not yet completed, this information is not available for 1996.

Despite the best efforts of IDA Ireland, the Border counties, with the exception of County Louth, have not attracted new IDA assisted investment in recent years. Any recent new jobs created in overseas companies in counties Cavan and Monaghan are as a result of developments in existing companies which have increased employment levels.

IDA Ireland will continue to promote Ireland including counties Cavan and Monaghan for overseas mobile investment while encouraging the expansion of existing overseas companies located there. In the final analysis, however, it is the incoming investment that decides where to locate by reference to the particular needs of the enterprise in question.
