Vol. 472 No. 5

Written Answers. - Resources and Support Units.

Trevor Sargent

Question:

69 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Education if her attention has been drawn to the appreciation which exists in the north County Dublin area for the SLD resource and support unit operating in St. Oliver Plunkett national school, Malahide, county Dublin; if she will extend the scheme in view of the long waiting list for this service and appoint an extra resource teacher in 1997 to meet the demand; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [23595/96]

I am very pleased to note that the special class to which the Deputy refers is operating successfully and that the facility is much appreciated by the parents of the children concerned.

The class, which caters for 11 children with specific learning disability, was established on a temporary basis in September 1996. The board of management of the schools agreed to the establishment of the class on a trial basis for one year. My Department recently received a request from the school authorities to have the class recognised on a permanent basis. This request is currently under consideration.

I understand that there is a waiting list for places in the class. I have asked my Department's inspectorate to investigate the need for the establishment of a second class.
