Vol. 472 No. 5

Written Answers. - DART Investment Package.

Ivor Callely

Question:

83 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications the Government's instructions or conditions, if any, on the £17 million investment in the DART; whether any of the investment was committed to a particular project; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [23562/96]

I refer to the previous reply to the Deputy's Question No. 9 of 24 October 1996 which sets out details of the various projects included in the £17 million package of DART and suburban rail investment in the greater Dublin Area.

Payment of EU assistance in respect of the package is subject to compliance by CIE with the following conditions: CIE must submit proposals for integrated ticketing and city centre on-street public transport interchange to the Minister for approval before 31 December 1996 and must implement the approved proposals not later than end 1999, financed where necessary from its own resources. CIE was required to and did carry out a review of the need for extra DART rolling stock, and submitted a report thereon to the Minister; and CIE was required to and did submit a programme to promote increased use of the DART and suburban rail network to the Minister.
