Vol. 472 No. 6

Adjournment Debate Matters.

I wish to advise the House of the following matters in respect of which notice has been given under Standing Order 21 and the name of the Member in each case: (1) Deputy Seán Ryan — the future of the vegetable industry in view of the current levels of importation; (2) Deputy Callely — the need to approve the necessary funding for building works in Ard Scoil Rís, Dublin 3; (3) Deputy O'Dea — the recent newspaper reports concerning an alleged break-in to Wheatfield Prison on 11 November 1996; (4) Deputy Lawlor — the urgent need for approval of Stages 3 and 4 of the Lucan library project to enable this matter to proceed to tendering; (5) Deputy Kirk — the need to have the administration of the area aid scheme decentralised on a regional basis because of the serious difficulties farmers are encountering in making contact with the Hume House offices in Dublin; (6) Deputy Batt O'Keeffe — the need to make funding available to repair the heating system at St. Mary's special school, Rochestown, County Cork; (7) Deputy Frances Fitzgerald — the effectiveness of the War Tribunals currently operating in The Hague; (8) Deputy Geoghegan-Quinn — the difficulty with batches of blood infected with HIV which were administered in transfusions, and the need to initiate a national screening programme for those affected; (9) Deputy Quill — the situation at Youghal Carpets, Killacloyne, Cork, where 300 jobs are at risk and the action which the Minister for Enterprise and Employment has taken, or will take, to protect those jobs; (10) Deputy Ned O'Keeffe — the need for the Minister for Enterprise and Employment to intervene in the serious crisis which has arisen at Youghal Carpet Yarn Factory, Killacloyne, Cork, in view of its proposed closure and the loss of 315 jobs; (11) Deputy Gallagher (Laoighis-Offaly)— the urgent need to provide a new Garda station for Tullamore, County Offaly, in view of the risk to the health and safety of the Garda Síochána and the public arising from the condition of the existing station; (12) Deputy Cecilia Keaveney — the need for maximum consultation and representation on the current review, and any new structure, of the Foyle Fisheries Commission.

The matters raised by Deputies O'Dea, Quill, Kirk and Keaveney have been selected for discussion.

I tabled a Private Notice Question and understood it would be introduced in the House. It relates to the closure of the carpet plant at Killacloyne, County Cork. Perhaps the Minister will come to our assistance, try to rescue the industry and save the 315 jobs, thus avoiding a bleak Christmas for the 315 workers in the industry.

That is not in order now.
