Vol. 472 No. 8

Written Answers. - School Accommodation.

Joe Walsh

Question:

97 Mr. J. Walsh asked the Minister for Education if her attention has been drawn to the local concern at the inadequate proposals to cater for boys' primary education needs at Clonakilty, County Cork; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [24250/96]

I am aware that the former junior and senior boys' schools in Clonakilty amalgamated in September 1995 to form Scoil na mBuachaillí. In order to facilitate the amalgamation, my Department intends to provide an extension to the former junior boys' school building.

At the time of amalgamation, the indications were that an extension of four classrooms and appropriate ancillary accommodation would be required to meet the needs of the new school. However, in the light of current projected enrolments, my Department is of the view that this level of accommodation may not be required in the longer term.

The primary building section of my Department has recently issued a revised accommodation brief to the school board of management. The board's response in the matter is awaited.
