Vol. 473 No. 1

Written Answers. - Cot Deaths.

Ivor Callely

Question:

108 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Health the number of cot deaths recorded in 1996; the total number of cot deaths recorded in each of the years 1994 and 1995; and the new revelations, if any, which have been brought to his attention regarding the sudden infant death syndrome. [24449/96]

Limerick East): According to the national sudden infant death register, which is maintained by the Irish Sudden Infant Death Association, the total number of deaths due to sudden infant death syndrome in 1994 was 40 and the figure for 1995 was 32. The association informed me that it is not in a position to publish a figure for cases notified to date in 1996, as these are, in some cases, subject to confirmation, but a confirmed figure for the year will be available early in 1997.

The Irish Sudden Infant Death Association is carrying out a number of research projects, results of which will be presented at its international conference in March 1997.
