Vol. 473 No. 1

Written Answers. - Labelling of Foodstuffs.

Trevor Sargent

Question:

146 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Health if he has satisfied himself that under the current Food Labelling Bill, there is no requirement to label genetically engineered food as such. [24618/96]

Limerick East): As the Deputy is aware, the labelling of foodstuffs is the responsibility of my colleague, the Minister for Enterprise and Employment.

The Deputy may also be aware that negotiations on a draft EU regulation on novel foods and novel food ingredients are at an advanced stage. I understand that the draft regulation, which is currently being handled by the Department of Agriculture, Food and Forestry, contains provisions relating to the labelling of such novel foodstuffs.
