Vol. 473 No. 1

Written Answers. - Lough Ree Management Plan.

Trevor Sargent

Question:

181 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht if the Heritage Service of his Department has drawn up a management plan for Lough Ree which would address the question of suitable locations for tourism development and a sustainable level of such development in view of the fact that it is a special protection area. [24685/96]

Lough Ree has been designated as a special protection area under the EU birds directive and the National Parks and Wildlife Service of my Department will prepare a conservation plan for Lough Ree which will take account of all activities impacting on the conservation status of the site. Consultations will be held with all interests in the area, including the tourism sector. This process will commence early in 1997.
