Vol. 473 No. 1

Written Answers. - Water and Sewerage Schemes.

Séamus Hughes

Question:

194 Mr. Hughes asked the Minister for the Environment the outcome of the meeting between the Minister for State at his Department and a deputation from Bangor Erris in respect of seeking approval for a water scheme; whether he will sanction the original scheme, costed at approximately £2 million; and the other alternatives, if any, being considered. [24484/96]

The deputation was advised this scheme would be given consideration in the context of the priority schemes to be advanced under the water and sewerage schemes programme in 1997. I intend to announce this programme early in the new year.

Question:

195 Mr. Hughes asked the Minister for the Environment the current position in respect of Westport waste water scheme in view of the confirmation of the compulsory purchase order and the recent meeting officials from his Department had with EU officials in this regard; whether cohesion funding for the construction of the scheme has been approved; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [24485/96]

Cohesion Funding of £2.2 million was approved by the European Commission for stage 1 of the Westport Sewerage Scheme in March 1994. Stage 1 provides for the planning and design of the scheme, investigation contracts, land acquisition and the procurement and processing of tenders. In the light of recent progress on the acquisition of a site for the treatment plant, the European Commission, at a recent Cohesion Fund Monitoring meeting, indicated that they would be prepared to modify the Stage 1 decision to take account of the revised completion date of 31 December 1997 for this stage. Accordingly, the Commission no longer propose to close off the application. A further application for Cohesion Fund assistance for the construction of the scheme will be submitted to the Commission next year.
