Vol. 473 No. 1

Written Answers. - School Places.

Liam Lawlor

Question:

210 Mr. Lawlor asked the Minister for Education the proposals, if any, she has to deal with the growing demand for primary and post-primary places in the new parish of Lucan south, County Dublin, where the population has grown by 140 per cent in the inter-censal period 1991 to 1996; if she will give details of the future building programme, if any, for the area; and her views on the continuing pressure for places in the three second-level schools in Lucan. [24282/96]

I am aware of the growth in population in the Lucan area generally and I accept the need for additional school accommodation at both primary and post-primary level in the area. At primary level, a major extension has been agreed for Archbishop Ryan national school, Balgaddy, which serves the new parish of Lucan South. Additional permanent accommodation has been approved for all three post-primary schools in Lucan and architectural planning is proceeding in all cases. In addition, the proposed siting in Lucan of the all-Irish community college to serve the west Dublin-north Kildare area will further ease the pressure for places at second level in the area. I am confident that the completion of these projects will ensure that there will be sufficient pupil places available in the Lucan area to meet the projected demand.
