Vol. 473 No. 1

Written Answers. - Shelton Abbey Prisoners.

Noel Davern

Question:

278 Mr. Davern asked the Minister for Justice if her attention has been drawn to the fact that prisoners returning to Shelton Abbey are ferried by taxi from Arklow town to their place of detention when returning from weekend visits home; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [24598/96]

Shelton Abbey is located approximately three miles from Arklow town and on return from periods of release, all offenders are collected in the town by Shelton Abbey staff in official prison transport. I am advised by the prison governor that taxis have not been used at Shelton Abbey for this purpose since 1986 and even prior to that year were only used on an exceptional basis.
