Vol. 473 No. 1

Written Answers. - Service Awards.

Noel Davern

Question:

363 Mr. Davern asked the Minister for Defence if he will consider issuing a medal or such award to persons with 25, 30 and 40 years service in the FCA; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [24737/96]

I do not propose to issue a medal or similar award to persons with 25, 30 or 40 years service in the FCA. There is no precedent for the making of such awards to members of any branch of the Defence Forces.

At present An Bonn Seirbhise — FCA agus An Slua Muirí — may be awarded to members or former members of An Forsa Cosanta Áitiúil who have seven years satisfactory service. At first bar to this medal may be awarded after twelve years satisfactory service and a second bar may be awarded after twenty one years satisfactory service.

I am satisfied that the range of medals which are awarded for service, bravery and for overseas service is adequate to meet the needs of the Defence Forces.
