Dáil Éireann debate -
Tuesday, 17 Dec 1996

Vol. 473 No. 1

Request to Move Adjournment of Dáil under Standing Order 31.

I move that the House suspend Standing Orders of the Dáil to debate an urgent matter, namely, the invasion by the hierarchy of Fine Gael in north Tipperary into the privacy of the ballot box by deliberately orchestrating the removal of the names of potential voters from the voters' register and, in particular, depriving many young people of their fundamental and democratic rights; and the urgent need for the Government to take appropriate action to restore these rights.

Explain hierarchy.

Having considered the matter fully I do not consider it to be one contemplated by the Standing Order and therefore I cannot grant leave to move the motion. I am sure Deputy Smith will find other ways of pursuing this matter. We must move to the Order of Business. Is the proposal to sit later than 8.30 p.m. tonight agreed?

I also experienced what was outlined by Deputy Smith and I am interested to learn of this case. I asked the registrar for the Dublin area to place the list in the Library of those people——

The Deputy is so pure.

Deputy Woods, that is not in order now. Is the proposal for the late sitting tonight agreed?

May I say——

Deputy Woods, do not defy the Chair in this disorderly fashion. Resume your seat or leave the House.
