Vol. 473 No. 1

Written Answers. - Afghanistani Detainees.

Ray Burke

Question:

64 Mr. R. Burke asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs whether the Government is aware of the cases of 70 alleged looters in Afghanistan who may face amputation if found guilty by the Taliban authorities; if so, the Government's and the EU's position in this regard; and the steps, if any, being taken by the Government, in its capacity as national executive and EU President, to ensure that such a barbaric sentence is not meted out against any of the 70 detainees, regardless of guilt or innocence. [24345/96]

I refer the Deputy to my reply to Question No. 57 of 6 November 1996.
