Walsh asked the Minister for Social Welfare the plans, if any, he has to remedy the inflexible eligibility requirements which result in many thousands of self-employed people being excluded from qualifying for State old age contributory pensions; and if he will make a statement on the matter. Walsh asked the Minister for Social Welfare the plans, if any, he has to remove the anomaly whereby self-employed persons aged 56 years or older on 6 April 1988 and who had not commenced contributions before that date, are denied eligibility for any portion of the contributory old age pension; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [24772/96]

It is proposed to take Questions Nos. 91 and 94 together.

The information requested by the Deputy is contained in my reply to Question No. 766 on 25 July 1996. There has been no change in the position since then.
