Vol. 473 No. 2

Written Answers. - Food Labelling.

Michael Creed

Question:

97 Mr. Creed asked the Minister for Enterprise and Employment his views on whether all genetically engineered food should carry comprehensive labelling; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [24818/96]

Under existing legislation, labels on food products must contain the following information; the name of the food; the list of ingredients; the net quantity by number, weight or volume; the date of minimum durability or "use-by" date; and any special storage instructions. I am informed that agreement was reached recently between the Council of Agriculture Ministers and the European Parliament on the text of a regulation relating to genetically modified foods, including specific labelling requirements. Responsibility in the matter resides with my colleague the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry.
