Vol. 473 No. 2

Written Answers. - People with Disabilities.

Desmond J. O'Malley

Question:

15 Mr. O'Malley asked the Minister for Equality and Law Reform the particular input, if any, the Irish Government had in ensuring that people with disabilities would be adequately represented in future policy initiatives; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [24679/96]

On 30 July 1996, the European Commission published its communication and draft resolution on Equality of Opportunity for People with Disabilities.

On 2 December 1996, the Irish Presidency secured the agreement of the Council of Labour and Social Affairs Ministers and the representatives of the member states meeting within the Council, to an amended resolution.

The resolution will, in my view, be fundamental in moving policy formulation in respect of people with disabilities clearly towards a rights based approach.
