Vol. 473 No. 2

Written Answers. - Medical Expenses.

Michael Ring

Question:

51 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Health when a person (details supplied) in County Mayo will be reimbursed for medical expenses incurred in view of the fact that he had a medical card at the time and Deputy Ring has been unable to get a reply from the Western Health Board. [24810/96]

Limerick East): Under the general medical services scheme, the provision of services for medical card holders is a matter for the chief executive officer of the relevant health board. In accordance with the terms of the scheme, medical card holders select their doctor of choice from a list provided by the relevant health board.

I have had inquiries made of the chief executive officer of the Western Health Board and I have been informed that the person referred to by the Deputy has a medical card and has sought reimbursement of expenses incurred while attending a doctor between 1986 and 1991, who was not his GMS doctor, in a private capacity.
The board has informed me that, as there is no apparent reason the person in question did not attend his own GMS doctor, it regrets that a refund of medical expenses cannot be made to him. I am also informed that the board wrote to the Deputy on the 30 September 1996, in relation to this matter.
