Vol. 473 No. 2

Written Answers. - Genetic Engineering.

Michael Creed

Question:

52 Mr. Creed asked the Minister for Health if research on genetic engineering is taking place by any agencies or institutions under the aegis of his Department; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [24811/96]

Limerick East): The Health Research Board is the statutory body under the aegis of my Department that has responsibility for medical and related research. I am advised that the board has no research projects on genetic engineering.

On the basis of the information available, I am not aware of any other agency or institution under the aegis of my Department that is conducting such research. However, in view of the short period of time available to address this question in what is a very complex area, it was not possible to carry out a thorough examination of the situation. Therefore, I have instructed my officials to make detailed inquiries into this matter and should any further information result from these inquiries, I will communicate it to the Deputy.
