Vol. 473 No. 2

Written Answers. - Hepatitis C Screening.

Seamus Brennan

Question:

53 Mr. S. Brennan asked the Minister for Health when he will reply to a person (details supplied) in Dublin 16, who has been in touch with his office for a prolonged period in relation to her concern that a negative result on a hepatitis C test may not be final; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [24828/96]

Limerick East): I have been informed by the Blood Transfusion Service Board (BTSB) that the person concerned underwent a hepatitis C screening test in March 1996. The result of this test was negative, and no further testing is required. Her general practitioner was informed accordingly. If the person is not satisfied she should contact the BTSB who will provide an additional test.

The person concerned was in touch with me previously in relation to her wish to claim compensation for the stress she suffered prior to being notified of her negative test result. As the Deputy is aware, the scheme of compensation which I introduced in December 1995 specifically applies to certain persons who have contracted hepatitis C from the use of human immunoglobulin — Anti-D, whole blood or other blood products. The person concerned has been notified accordingly.
