Micheál Martin

Question:

140 Mr. Martin asked the Minister for Education the total amount of European funding allocated in respect of inservice training for teachers under the Operational Programme, 1994 to 1999, in each of the years from 1994 to 1996; the funds which will be available from this source in each of the years from 1997 to 1999; the actual amount of matching funding allocated by the Government in each of the years from 1994 to 1996; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [25083/96]

Inservice training for teachers and trainers in first and second level schools and in third level colleges is funded under the training or trainers measure in the Operational Programme for Human Resources Development. The total allocation of aid from the European Social Fund in the operational programme for the period 1994-99 is £36.044 million, matching Exchequer funds amount to £12.014 million, giving a total expenditure provision of £48.058 million (1994 prices).

Actual expenditure following in 1994 and 1995, with latest forecasts for 1996-99 are given in the following table. These latest forecasts take account of underspending in 1994 and 1995, the reallocation of this underspending over the remaining years of the programme, provisions made by the European Commission for inflation and exchange rate variations between the Irish £ and the ECU.
