Written Answers. - Schools Building Projects.

Mary O'Rourke

Question:

316 Mrs. O'Rourke asked the Minister for Education the current position regarding forward plans for Colaiste Cionn Torc, Castlepollard, County Westmeath; if she will outline the various stages which had earlier been reached in the planning process for a new second-level school in Castlepollard; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [1023/97]

My Department has approved in principle the provision of a permanent extension at Colaiste Cionn Torc, Castlepollard, County Westmeath. In this regard County Westmeath Vocational Education Committee have been requested to nominate a design team for the project. This nomination is awaited.

A previous proposal for this school did not progress beyond preliminary planning.

My Department has also approved the provision of temporary accommodation which will address the immediate accommodation requirements of the school.

Michael Creed

Question:

317 Mr. Creed asked the Minister for Education if she will sanction an extension to a school (details supplied) in County Cork. [1024/97]

An architect from my Department recently visited the school to which the Deputy refers. His report is being considered and my Department will be in touch with the school management as soon as possible. Any work considered necessary will have to be considered in the context of existing contractual commitments and available funds.

Charles Flanagan

Question:

319 Mr. Flanagan asked the Minister for Education the current position regarding the building of a primary school at Raheen, Abbyleix, County Laois; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [1028/97]

A new school for Raheen will be considered for inclusion in a future Capital Programme. At present, my Department is working to complete projects already included in earlier programmes.

Charles Flanagan

Question:

320 Mr. Flanagan asked the Minister for Education the current position regarding the building of a primary school at Shanganmore, Barrowhouse, Athy, County Laois; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [1029/97]

The current position regarding the building of a new primary school at Shanganmore, Barrowhouse, Athy, County Laois, is that the school authorities have applied for planning permission for the project. On receipt of this the preparation of working drawings and tender/contract documents will commence.

When this is completed, a decision will be made on the tender process in the light of funds available. My Department will keep in touch with the school authorities in the matter.

Mary Coughlan

Question:

321 Miss Coughlan asked the Minister for Education the current stage of the proposed Ballyshannon community school, County Donegal; and when this school will go to tender. [1078/97]

The position is that a new community school building is to be provided in Ballyshannon, County Donegal, to facilitate a rationalisation of the existing postprimary schools in the centre.

The architectural planning of the school building had progressed to stage three on the basis that the Bundoran facility, which is an out-centre of Ballyshannon vocational school, would be part of the rationalisation. However, County Donegal Vocational Education Committee has recently informed my Department that it supported the retention and continuation of a second-level school in Bundoran and that the rationalisation of schools should be confined to those in Ballyshannon only.

As you will appreciate, this proposal has implications for the level of accommodation to be provided in the new school building for Ballyshannon. In the circumstances, my Department is currently carrying out a review of the centre.

Éamon Ó Cuív

Question:

322 Éamon Ó Cuív asked the Minister for Education when work required on Collinamuck national school (details supplied) in County Galway, which was included in the 1995 Capital Programme, will go to tender; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [1079/97]

Collinamuck is one of a number of urgent projects I am considering for funding in the 1997 building programme. I will take a decision in the matter very shortly and it will be communicated to the school management.

Eric J. Byrne

Question:

323 Mr. E. Byrne asked the Minister for Education the progress, if any, made on an application by the post primary section of Ard Scoil Eanna, Crumlin, Dublin 12; the current stage of the building project; if sanction will be granted in this regard; and if so, when. [1080/97]

My Department's post primary building unit has received applications for emergency works in respect of roof repair and heating at Ard Scoil Eanna, Crumlin, Dublin 12.

The position in respect of these applications is as follows: tender documents have been requested by my Department for the emergency roofing works. With regard to the heating system, my Department's post-primary building unit is currently awaiting a report from the school's design team outlining details of the works required and an estimated budget. Grant aid was sanctioned in order to maintain the heating system during the current school year. However, the school was informed that this was only a temporary solution. A full refurbishment will need to be carried out at the school.

With regard to the current building project, the school authorities have been instructed to submit their stage 4 and 5 documentation, including tender documents, which my Department's post primary building unit is still awaiting. Until this documentation is received it is not possible to give a clear indication when construction will commence.
